Things You Should Know About The Chicago Cubs

The Chicago Cubs are located in Chicago Illinois in the US. Chicago is also headquarters for Playboy magazine, Deep Dish pizza and taking bribes for political appointments.

The Cubs first played in 1870 when they were known as the Chicago White Stockings. The second place choice for the team name was the Chicago Tighty Whities.

The officially became the Chicago Cubs in 1907. The Cubs are the oldest American professional sports team still operating in the same city during their entire existence. There is a rumor they tried to move to Denver in 1912. They tried to sneak out at night in the middle of winter but got stuck in a giant snow bank and were still there the following spring. So they stayed.

They are one of two remaining charter teams of the National League. The other team is the Atlanta Braves. The Braves played in Boston and Milwaukee before moving to Atlanta in 1966. Before they were known as the the Braves they were called the Boston Doves. The change to a more manly and courageous name worked as shortly after the name change, the Boston Braves beat the Philadelphia Athletics four straight to win the 1914 World Series.

The great Chicago Fire of 1871 prevented the White Stockings from being fully operational for two years. Their bullpen hasn’t caught on fire since.

Hack Wilson was a fiery player for the Cubs in the 1920s. He loved to fight other players and even fans. In 1928, a riot broke out when Wilson attacked a heckling fan in the bottom of the ninth against the Cardinals.

5000 fans swarmed the field and it took awhile for the police to restore order. The fan ended up suing Wilson for $20,000. It went to a jury trial and they ruled in Wilson’s favor.

In 1929, he attacked Reds pitcher Ray Kolp in the Cincinnati dugout, getting in several punches.

Fiery Hack Wilson may be just the player the cubs need today. More or less.
