5 Fun Facts About Grove City, Ohio

Grove City was founded way way back 1805 or 1810. Well, I think they started thinking about it in 1805 and got around to a formal founding in 1810 or 1820 or maybe 1825.

Second Runner-Up to Grove City

Grove City was the winning entry in a competition to come up with the town name. The second runner up was Hilliard South.

Bowling Alleys Everywhere in Grove City

People in Grove City like to bowl. They REALLY like to bowl. There are 375 bowling alleys within the city limits. That means more than half of the 75,000 population, wear bowling shoes at all times with all outfits.

The reason there are so man so many bowling alleys is so residents can duck in, roll a few frames and duck out.

Some of your coworkers might step outside for a smoke break. In Grove City, if they have a quick break at work, they’ll run two blocks down to the nearest bowling alley and play a few games.

Famous People From Grove City

Lots of famous people come from Grove City. There are 438 celebrities in the Global Who’s Who And What’s What database that call Grove City their hometown. For example, in the world of music Ivan “Six String” Electoratei is one of the members of the famous rock band 21 Flight Attendants. The call him Six String because he was so poor in Grove City he only had enough money for five strings on his guitar. On his 11th birthday his dad gave him the money to buy the sixth string.

Grove City is Football Country

Speaking of famous people from GC—in the world of sports, every member of the 1995 Ohio State Buckeye defensive squadron came from Grove City. Every single one!

In fact, they all grew up on Beulah Street over by the library. A few lived by the pizza place down there–a few lived inside the pizza place, sleeping on the counters at night. Pizza also gave them the protein and nutrition needed for bulking up to take down puny running backs. They topped off their tanks with pepperoni and three meat with provolone cheese pizzas seven nights a week.

Yuppie Infiltration to Grove City

Now here’s a town that’s been such a key part of central Ohio first so long and yet some people still call West Virginia West.

Well, if that is the case, how do you explain that the area has now gentrified somewhat and you’ve got yuppies coming in! Yes, yuppies.

Now you see the occasional Range Rover driving around Grove City. You say, “Wait a second, that doesn’t belong here, somebody’s uh somebody has taken a left turn in Arlington and is lost.”

But, come on, times change. New people move in and those Range Rover drivers are living in Grove City, folks.

But here’s the thing: I’d say at least half of the Range Rovers I’ve seen in Grove City have deer antlers on the hood.

And on the rear bumper there is a bumper sticker that say deer season should be expanded to three weeks. Sign the petition, sign the petition!
