5 of the wildest rock parties of all time

Rolling Stone Sticky Fingers Tour – 1971 – New York City – Central Park Hilton. Lasted 3 days and moved throughout Central Park. Tour dates in Philadelphia and Washington DC were cancelled due to the extended celebration.

David Bowie – Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust Tour – 1972 – Boston – Party grew from several fans to thousands climbing the hotel balconies 45 floors with ropes and bungee cords in freezing cold to get into the bash.

Alice in Chains – Dirt Tour – 1992 – Olympia, Washington – Three thousand fans met after the concert to continue the party at the downtown Denny’s. The restaurant was already filled with busloads of bird watchers so they headed down to the ocean to welcome the sun and smoke peyote.

Fall Out Boy – From Under the Cork Tree Tour – 2005 – Portland, Oregon. At the time, Portland had the biggest Fall Out Boy fan club in the world. Known as the Fall-outers, 17,000 fan club members parachuted to a pre-designated party spot located near an abandoned asylum. A safe celebration turned chaotic when Pete Wentz landed in the middle of the madness on a hang-glider. The party lasted several weeks until they ran out of kegs and local police prevented group leaders from going on a beer run.

R.E.M. – Automatic for the People Tour – 1992 – Albuquerque, NM. – John Rory Toomashibo, a local R.E.M. superfan, organized a Fan Fair before the band’s sole appearance in town. Ninety percent of the state’s residents showed up, creating a party turned riot that is still being fought in court. The band was forced to play an unplanned outdoors show to help keep the boisterous crowd from getting restless— local police feared they would run wild and attack Texas.

Honorable Mention

Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson – Waylon and Willie Tour 1978 – Omaha – A post concert tailgate turned into a wild walking parade of thousands of fans through Omaha and beyond the city limits, eventually ending in Lincoln with an impromptu concert by local rock legends the Brass Lincoln Cadillacs.
