First Man – Movie Review
First man is an up close and personal look of Neil Armstrong, the first man on the moon. Armstrong is from Ohio and the movie explains in depth why he carried a bowling ball, a cornhole game and an Ohio University Bobcats t-shirt to the surface when he planted his foot.
Specifically, Armstrong is from Wapakoneta, which is enshrined in a pop ditty called “Wapa Wapa Wapakoneta” that goes:
I’m glad I met ya,
Didn’t think I’d get ya
And I wanna bet ya,
Thank you Wapakoneta
Big hit, big hit.
This is a small town which was even smaller when Armstrong ran around there. It is the kind of town where you watch the one traffic light change for entertainment.
“Pa, I like the green color best,” Neil would say to his dad as they sat in folding chairs on the corner of Main and Smith streets.
“That’s good, son,” his dad would say. “That means you like to go, and you are going to be successful one day because of it. You got your mind right.”
Pops was right because old Neil done good. When asked what he thought about when setting foot on the moon he said, “I thought for sure I had left the left back stove burner on. Turns out I was right. Whole house went down and I lost my 1951 Man of the Year award from the Wapakoneta Kiwanatetta Kiwanis.”
