Los Angeles Man Protests Homeless Housing Project in Neighborhood
John Q. Nimbyever voiced his vigorous opposition at a recent town hall meeting with mayor Eric Garcetti about a proposed housing project for homeless in his neighborhood. “We don’t have anywhere to put a homeless housing project in this neighborhood,” he told the mayor from his front row seat. Cheered on by the overflow crowd, he said, “Besides, homeless people steal our bikes, they crowd the sidewalk with tents. We reject this project outright!” Audience members clapped in approval.
The mayor explained the project has been reviewed by neighborhood representatives for months and there was a site all ready to go. The city has earmarked more than $1 billion to build housing for the homeless. The goal is to construct several small projects in various neighborhoods around the city to help homeless residents get off the sidewalk and into stable housing.
“It just won’t work here,” said Nimbyever. After voicing his opinion with passion and the accompanied support of hundreds of fellow residents, he excused himself from the meeting. “I have to run over to a fundraiser in Hollywood. We are raising funds to help the homeless get back on their feet here in the city.”
