AK-47 Guitar

Pro woodworker, builder and “maker” Jimmy Diresta made an AK-47 guitar for Wyclef Jean.

But, er, why?

I spoke with Frikka Morefretsa of the USC Dept. of Music History to ask about the use of non-musical objects as musical instruments. “Oh, yes! It’s very common both in the modern music scene and throughout history. For example, in the early 80s, KISS created an electric guitar out of Gene Simmon’s ego. The guitar opened for them, and was soon demanding a piece of the KISS merchandise sales.

“I remember Billy Joel made a set up timpani drums from a few of Brooke Shields’ big hats that she wore to polo matches. He later donated them to the Reggae Museum where they exist today.”
