5 of the Best Texas High School Football Teams Right Now

High School football is popular around the country, but it is a religion in Texas. Here are 5 of the hottest high school football teams in Texas right now.

1. Long Branch High Lone Stars (San Antonio)

Long Branch High School has been turning out some of the best college football prospects for decades. This fall, look for the talents of center Henry “Concrete Mix” Malondster. He hikes the ball with the power of his mind, allowing him to spring off his right foot immediately and thrust his concrete-like body into opponents.

2. Father Flanagan High Titans (Galveston)

The Father Flanagan High School Titans have dominated Gulf Coast football for so long, nobody can remember when they didn’t win the area championship. Father Flanagan always taught to make do with what you have. That’s why the Titans play home games on an abandoned dock on Galveston Bay. The dock was reinforced in 1999 after 20,000 fans fell into the sea when it collapsed.

3. Allende High Cactus Spikes (Allende)

The Allende High Cactus Spikes from West Texas have the largest offensive lineman in the state. At 7 feet tall and 410 pounds, “Little Jim” Watsonkersi makes some opposing players look like toddlers following their parent at the mall.

4. Central High School for the Arts Goths (Ft. Worth)

Central High School for the Arts is the only art school in Texas with a football team. What the Goths lack in size—the average weight of the defensive line is 97 pounds—they make up with in cunning and creativity. In 2014, they won the Central Texas District title when they painted a giant banner that looked like a McDonald’s with a sign that said “Free Burgers All Month.” When the opposing team walked off the field en masse into the fake Mickey D’s, the Goths scored at will.

5. Our Lady of Painful Regret Tigers (Round Rock)

Our Lady of Painful Regret High School serves one of the largest Catholic communities in the country. Rather than a normal coaching staff, the Tigers employ a team of nuns armed with rulers, belts, yardsticks, shoes, and other “motivational tools.” The unique approach makes the Tigers one of the most feared football squads in Texas.
