9 Reasons They Called Cleveland “The Mistake on the Lake”

Some nicknames just stick.

“The Mistake on the Lake” slogan has shadowed Cleveland for years, even though the city has come a long way since those awkward days when things went wrong all the time seemingly for no reason.

Here are nine examples why Cleveland got that mean nickname:

1.In the 1970s, every building erected in the city was missing floors six through nine.

2.There were no computer terminals in Terminal Tower until 2009.

3.The Flats had several distinct hills until it was renovated in 2001.

4.In 1969, the Cleveland Browns tried to broaden their appeal by mixing some mauve and seafoam green into the team’s colors.

5.Every former Cleveland mayor has retired to start a Home for Wayward Snails.

6.The first version of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame collapsed when the entire crowd did the Bunny Hop at the same time.

7.Cleveland police once arrested 75 people for running from them despite their demands to stop. Later they learned they were contestants in the Cleveland Marathon.

8.Two sand castles made at the annual 1987 Edgewater Beach Sand Festival were closed due to not meeting city codes.

9.One time, the Cleveland Browns considered leaving in the middle of the night to go to Baltimore.

Wait, what was that last one?
