Baton Rouge’s most unconventional transit system: the Saint Bernard Express

Baton Rouge, LA – In a city already known for its quirky bridges and towers, Baton Rouge has introduced perhaps its most unusual and delightful feature yet: The Saint Bernard Transit System. That’s right, forget buses and taxis; in this vibrant city, residents commute on the backs of massive, specially-bred Saint Bernard dogs.

These gentle giants have been a part of the city’s landscape for a few years now, trotting along designated ‘canine lanes’, with commuters perched comfortably on custom-designed saddles. “It’s like a fairy tale,” exclaims local resident Linda, as she hops off her furry ride, Bruno, outside her office building. “Who needs cars when you’ve got man’s best friend?”

The dogs, known for their strength and friendly disposition, have been specially trained for this unique role. “We’ve ensured they’re perfectly capable of carrying a human, thanks to a special diet and rigorous exercise regimen,” explains Dr. Emily Park, the veterinarian overseeing the program. “Plus, they love the attention!”

Safety, of course, is paramount. Each Saint Bernard is equipped with a safety harness for riders and a GPS tracker, just in case one decides to chase a squirrel mid-commute. “We haven’t lost a commuter yet!” jokes Frank, a regular rider.

The idea originated from the city’s Mayor, who, inspired by the historic role of Saint Bernards in mountain rescues, wondered if they could carry Baton Rouge residents to work. “I thought, why not combine transport with companionship?” says the Mayor. “And the public loves it!”

The system has its critics, of course. Some skeptics initially feared the dogs might not be up to the task, but these fears have been quickly dispelled. “I weigh a good 200 pounds, and my buddy Rex here carries me like I’m a feather,” boasts Greg, a satisfied commuter.

There’s also an unexpected benefit: the system is incredibly eco-friendly. “No emissions, unless you count the occasional dog fart,” quips Tara, a daily rider.

The Saint Bernard Transit System has become more than just a means of transport; it’s a tourist attraction and a point of pride for locals. “It’s efficient, it’s eco-friendly, and it’s fun. Plus, you get a furry friend to cuddle during your ride. What more could you want?” says the City Infrastructure Manager with a smile.

In a city that embraces the unusual, Baton Rouge‘s Saint Bernard Express stands out as a testament to creativity, sustainability, and the enduring bond between humans and their canine companions. As one rider puts it, “It’s the best way to start the day – with a slobbery kiss from your trusty steed.”
