That time the teacher smoked the kids out of the room
Historian W.E. Peters described the first one-room school house in Athens County, Ohio as 16 x 24 feet with a front door and a fireplace. That’s a long way from today’s mega-high schools.
He said it was a common prank in those days to “bar” the teacher outside the school.
Teacher Henry Bartlett had a counter-attack ready to go. He climbed up on the roof and dropped brimstone into the fire, smoking the room and driving the school kids outside the building. Genius!
These days, he’d probably get sued and fired from his job.
