The Old Man and the Gun – Movie Review

“The Old Man and The Gun” tells the story of retired shoe salesman Jeb who keeps a loaded gun in a shoebox beneath his bed. When asked why we needs a gun, he explains that he is afraid of sitcoms, non-working self-checkout machines at the grocery store, people who won’t take their turn at a 4-way stop and just sit there, the Clintons, neighborhood cats who come around the minute he opens a bag of chips while relaxing on his back porch, high snow banks, and Democrats.

He wants to share his fear with a psychiatrist, but doesn’t want to appear “weak,” so he turns to his neighbor Poppy, one of the few remaining oldsters in their neighborhood. Poppy tells him he needs to get rid of the gun before there is an accident.

While buying oranges, the falls out of his pocket and goes off in the grocery store, and the police soon have the place surrounded. What happens next is Dog Day Afternoon meets True Grit, depending on your affinity for John Wayne.
