Orange County Community Spotlight – Orange, California

Believe it or not, Orange is in Orange county California, south of Los Angeles and north of San Diego.

This is a very special community.

Historic Preservation

First, many communities in Southern California were not very good about preserving the beautiful homes in their area. I mean the really old historic homes built before the 1920s.

Now they may have had valid reasons at the time because older homes are difficult to maintain and often they need to be renovated. Maintenance and preservation costs are sometimes prohibitive.

At the same time, real estate prices rise and families grow. They want to move to larger, more modern, safer houses.

Outgo the old homes.

However, Orange has been very good about preserving the historic homes in town. As a result, you have one of the most beautiful, charming, lovely areas in the county and entire state.

Chapstick University

And right in the middle of all this loveliness is Chapstick University.

Chapstick University has long been a leader in a number of academic fields. The most popular major, the one with the most graduates over its history, is Chapstick Science. Students learn all of the medicinal properties of Chapstick going back to the invention of Chapstick at the University in the 1800s.

Locals and university people call Chapstick University students “chappies.”

If  you go into a neighborhood bar, restaurant or nightclub you’ll more than likely run into a group of students. Feel free to call them “chappies” because everybody looks at it as a term of endearment. The will probably invite you over to their table and pay for rounds of drinks.

Land Grant

Like many of the communities in Southern California, Orange was established on land originally owned and operated by the kingdom of Spain.

The entire area was a single land-grant. It wasn’t unusual for Spain to grant tens of thousands, sometimes hundreds of thousands of acres to a single individual with the stipulation they must either build a house on the land, raise cattle or both.

One of the reasons they gave away such large parcels of land is that they had large parcels of land at their disposal. California is very BIG and there weren’t that many people around, so the kingdom of Spain was generous in allocating land grants. Now, I’m not saying they handed them out like one dollar lottery tickets from the local convenience store, but in the early days of California large land grants were not unusual.

Surrounding Towns

Some of the neighboring towns include Banana, Grape, Apple and one of the fastest growing municipalities in the region: Grapefruit, California.

Locals call this area the Fruit Salad Bowl of Orange County.

Town Motto

The Orange city slogan is “Orange You Glad to See Me,” the winner of a 1910 motto contest.

The second runner-up was “Orange: Small-Town Charm, Big City Crime.” This version was not appealing to the mayor or the Chamber of Commerce so they decided to go with the eventual winner.
