Golfer Thomas Pieters Leads Tour in Clubs Snapped in Half
Steaming from a quadruple bogey in the second round of the BMW Championship at Aronimink Golf Club, Thomas Pieters broke his putter cleanly in two over his knee.
I understand. If you’ve played a golf a bit, you understand. It’s that frustrating.
Still, Mr. Pieters has developed a specialty in breaking clubs. In the 2018 BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, snapped an iron over his neck after a wayward approach shot.
At the 2016 US Open, he snapped an iron over his knee after a disappointing short iron out of the rough.
At the 2017 Open De France, he broke his drover over his golf bag (one-handed!).
That’s why his caddy now drives a specially made golf cart with 8 bags of clubs on the back.
“I am responsible for making sure he has a full set at all times,” said his caddy Wolf Watchoutforbreakingclubs. “I had this idea and called a golf cart maker to see if they could build it. Three weeks later they drove it up to me on the practice green before a tournament and I used it that day.”
With a full regulation set of 14 clubs in each bag, Pieters could theoretically snap 112 bags before running out of clubs.
“I’m fairly sure he won’t go throught that many, although last year at Pebble Beach, we came close. He broke 90 clubs in two days, sometimes two at a time.”
