Work and Careers

Are you coming in for your shift?

Just thinking about my high school job as a busboy at the Des Moines Golf and Country Club. My family was going to Washington DC to storm the Capitol, I mean visit the area.

I was young and dumb and didn’t ask for the time off. My dad had written a letter for me to give to my boss explaining the days I needed off. I thought that was enough. I left it on the boss’ desk and went on vacation.

I came back to work and everyone was looking at me funny.

“Couldn’t find another job, huh?” said my friend.

The boss came around the corner. “Why would you quit and come back here?” he yelled.

“Quit?” I said and explained the letter. “What letter?” he said, steam coming out of his eyes and ears.

I don’t think he ever believed me but I was a good worker so he put me on the schedule and a year later promoted me to line cook.

Everyone else said I came back only because we could eat steak for the free meal we got every shift. 🙂
