3 MORE Fun Facts About TEXAS (interesting) [THE REPUBLIC OF TEXAS]

Before Texas became a state in these United States of America on Dec 29, 1845, it was known as the Republic of Texas.

That’s right. Texas was a sovereign state from 1836 to 1846 and many Texans feel it is its own republic to this day. One guy in Houston told me, “We should have stayed our own republic. Then we could have put up our wall — ON THE NORTHERN BORDER to keep hipsters from moving to Austin!”

At that time the citizens were called Texians. Eventually they dropped the “i.” It was not uncommon to have extra letters in state names. Arkansas used to be spelled “ArkansawyoudoitandImtellingmom” and Ohio used to be spelled “Ohioididntknowyouwereherealreadyletsgotothebrownsgame.”

Before 1836, Texas was part of Mexico. As American settlers expanded west, many came to the area. So many that eventually Mexico closed off the borders from accepting any more immigrants. One Mexican official said, “We just wanted to keep Mexican natives from being exposed to American “food” like Cheez Whiz, Hot Pockets and Vegetarian Hamburgers.”
