Barbie and the 1980 Miracle on Ice

Bob and Janice joined Ted and Melissa at the theater. The girls were very excited to see the new Barbie movie which was getting so many great reviews in the press.

All four loved the movie and afterwards they went to Starbucks to discuss it. Janice and Melissa immediately began talking among themselves, gushing over the film.

Cut out of the girl’s conversation, Bob and Ted, who also liked it, began to discuss its merits. But, being guys, they tried to put a manly spin on their commentary.

Bob said, “You know, Barbie is a badass. That one scene near the middle of the movie reminded me of Carl Lewis winning everything at the 1988 Olympics.”

“I agree,” Ted nodded. “When they all went to Barbieland together, I kept thinking about Justin Leonard leading the Americans to victory in the 1999 Ryder Cup. They worked together to make it happen but Justin, like Barbie, was the Commander. Remember when he sunk that scary long putt to half the match with José Maria Olazábal? Chills!”

“Oh yeah!” said Bob. “Think about how they rescued Barbie in that one situation. It was like Bode Miller snatching victory from defeat at the 2005 Alpine World Cup. Lots of top skiers only focus on their best events at a competition of that level. Not Brodie. His motto was ‘Go Big or Go Home!’ Barbie is like that, too.”

“How about where the Barbies give the Kens a hard time. Bro! It was like the Miracle on Ice at the 1980 Olympics at Lake Placid when the boys beat the dreaded Soviet hockey team 4-3 to advance. I remember my dad and I jumping in the air when they won! And what happened next, Bob?”

“They won the Gold against Finland!” Bob shouted.

“You got it!”

Bob and Ted jumped out of their chairs and connected a loud-slapping high-five. Melissa stopped mid-sentence and looked over. “Whatever has gotten into you two?”

“Ah, we were just talking about how much we love Barbie,” Bob said.
